The Apprentice Unveiled

This article was published on May 26, 2020

Last week I chatted to NewVoiceMedia's new apprentice Lee Herbert, a mover and shaker supreme in the IT scene. Having taken the heat in the kitchen as chef’s assistant, and branched out as a tree surgeon, Lee’s now found his true calling as IT Assistant. Here’s what I found out about his career journey so far.

How did the apprenticeship come about?

My cousin was originally on the apprenticeship scheme with Pearson and told me about it. I wanted to apply straight away as it seemed like an excellent opportunity to gain some great skills and start a really good career. I then got the chance to complete my work placement part of the apprenticeship with NewVoiceMedia.

Once I was accepted and started my training, I knew IT was the career for me, and that NewVoiceMedia was where I wanted to work.

How long did you train for and what did you gain?

The apprenticeship was about nine months long and over three months of that was spent gaining practical experience at NewVoiceMedia. The rest of the time I was learning at Pearson Academy.

Just some of the qualifications I gained on the apprenticeship, are:

  • Advanced Apprenticeship in IT, Software, Web & Telecoms Professionals
  • CompTIA A+: Microsoft Certified IT Professional
  • Microsoft Technology Associate: Networking Fundamentals
  • Microsoft Technology Associate: Windows Operating Systems Fundamentals
  • HP ATA: Connected Devices
  • Level 2 Key Skills in Information & Communication Technology

What were you up to before joining NewVoiceMedia?

Before I started my apprenticeship, I worked in a few kitchens as a chef’s assistant and was even a tree surgeon for a while!

I couldn’t see a future with those jobs, but luckily I was offered a fantastic opportunity at NewVoiceMedia where I have really found my feet and embarked on a brilliant career.

What does your job involve?

My role involves setting up IT equipment for new starters, (as the company is growing so fast now, we’re always busy!), maintaining IT equipment and responding to any issues raised by staff.

One of the great things about this job is that there’s always something different around the corner. I’m kept very busy and offered a new challenge each day, so I’m constantly learning more and more.

What do you like most about your role?

Everyone is so friendly and helpful, and I can talk to anyone if I have any queries, which is ideal for learning more and progressing.

There’s a brilliant community and team, which makes the environment a great place to work in. I can honestly say that I look forward to going to work every day!
